The Girl I Once Was

The Knowing

There is always a girl you once were. She laughed without checking who was watching. She played without guilt. She dreamed without needing a reason. She trusted her own excitement. And she carried a softness the world had not yet taught her to hide.

You didn’t notice when she faded. Most women don’t. It happens slowly, as life begins asking more of you than your spirit was ever meant to hold alone. You learned responsibility. You learned what others needed. You learned to be steady, reliable, and composed, even when you were tired. Over time, she slipped beneath the layers of who you had to become.

But she never disappeared. She shows up in tiny, unexpected ways. A memory that warms your chest. A longing that arrives out of nowhere. A moment where you laugh and hear her in your voice. She rises like a quiet ache, not to pull you backward, but to remind you that you were someone before life became heavy.

And she misses you too.

The Becoming

The girl you once were lives beneath every version of you. She’s tucked under the roles you carry, the emotional labor you perform, the responsibilities that fill your day. She waits in the corners of your joy, your desires, your cravings for softness and play.

You spent years learning to silence her so you could endure what needed to be endured. You became capable when she wanted comfort. You became strong when she needed rest. You became composed when she wanted to cry. She wasn’t hidden because you rejected her. She was hidden because you had to survive.

Returning to her is not regression. It’s reconnection.
It is remembering that the girl you once were held truths your adult self still needs. It is saying, I haven’t forgotten you. You matter here too.

You meet her when you allow yourself to want something without practicality. You meet her when you allow silliness, pleasure, curiosity, or softness. You meet her when you let yourself be human, not just useful.

She does not need you to be who you were.
She needs you to carry her forward.

The Rise

Close your eyes for a moment and picture her. Imagine her face, her hope, her excitement about possibilities she believed were meant for her. Let one thing she loved come with you into today. Let her remind you of who you were before you carried so much.

You have not outgrown her.
You have grown around her.

She is still here, waiting for you to look inward long enough to say,
I see you. I remember you. Come with me.

Each time you reach for her, you become more whole.
Each time you make space for her, you rise.

 Your Micro Ritual for Today

A small return to the girl beneath your responsibilities

The Truth
Whisper to yourself, the girl I once was is still inside me. She is not lost.

The Reflection
Think of one thing you loved deeply as a child or teen. Something you didn’t do for approval. Something that lit you up just because it felt like you. What part of that still calls to you.

The Permission
Place one hand on your chest and breathe slowly. Say quietly, I welcome her home today, even in one gentle way.
